The Cape Lookout National Seashore encompasses three barrier islands along the southern Outer Banks. The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is the only diamond-patterned light tower in the U.S. Its checkered daymark is also a directional aid, as its black diamonds point north-south, and its white diamonds point east-west.
